RCD Protection Explained: Why It Matters Outdoors
If you've been shopping for outdoor extension leads, you've likely seen "RCD protected" listed as a feature — often on a middle-of-the-range option, priced above a basic lead but below the fully armoured version. It's easy to skip past this as a nice-to-have. It shouldn't be. RCD protection is arguably the single most important safety feature for any outdoor electrical setup.
What an RCD actually does
RCD stands for Residual Current Device. In simple terms, it constantly monitors the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If it detects even a small imbalance — current going somewhere it shouldn't, such as through a person, through water, or through a damaged cable — it cuts the power automatically, typically within milliseconds.
That imbalance is exactly what happens during an electric shock or an earth fault, which is why an RCD is often described as the device that can be the difference between a nasty shock and a fatal one.
Why outdoor use makes this so much more important
Indoors, in a dry environment, with intact wiring, the risk of this kind of fault is relatively low. Outdoors, several things stack up against you:
- Moisture – rain, damp grass, condensation, and general outdoor humidity all increase the risk of a fault developing
- Physical wear – cables outside get trodden on, caught by mowers and strimmers, and generally handled more roughly than an indoor lead
- Contact with the ground – standing on wet grass or a damp patio while using a faulty appliance dramatically increases shock risk, because your body becomes part of the path to earth
- Less frequent inspection – outdoor cables, especially ones left in place, don't get the same daily visual check as something you use indoors
An RCD doesn't prevent a fault from happening, but it makes sure that when one does happen, the power cuts before it can seriously hurt someone.
RCD vs no RCD: what you're actually choosing
A non-RCD outdoor extension lead can still be IP66-rated and perfectly weatherproof — the IP rating and the RCD are protecting against two different things. IP rating keeps water out. RCD protection is your backup if something goes wrong anyway — a cut cable, a damaged plug, a fault inside whatever you've plugged in.
For genuinely outdoor use, especially anywhere near water (hot tubs, ponds, hosing down a patio, wet grass) or anywhere the cable might get physically damaged, RCD protection isn't really optional — it's the safety net that catches the situations the IP rating alone can't.
Where RCD protection matters most
- Hot tubs and paddling pools – water and electricity in close proximity, high stakes
- Garden power tools – strimmers, hedge trimmers, and mowers are the classic cause of cable damage
- Permanent or semi-permanent outdoor setups – sheds, lighting runs, anything left out for extended periods
- Anywhere children or pets have access – reduces risk from accidental damage or contact
Built-in RCD vs a separate RCD adaptor
Some outdoor extension leads have RCD protection built directly into the plug or socket unit, which is the simplest and most reliable option — it's rated specifically for that lead and can't be forgotten or left unplugged. A separate RCD adaptor plugged in ahead of a standard lead also works, but it's another connection point and another thing that needs to be checked and used correctly every time.
