It's tempting to assume "armoured" just means more expensive, but the difference is about what the cable is actually built to withstand — and picking the wrong one for your situation is a common (and avoidable) mistake.
What "armoured" actually means
An armoured cable has an additional protective layer — typically steel wire armour (SWA) — wrapped around the inner conductors, beneath the outer sheath. This layer exists to protect the cable from physical damage: being trodden on, run over, caught by a strimmer, chewed by garden wildlife, or crushed if it's buried or run along a hard surface.
A standard flex extension lead, by contrast, relies on a tough rubber or PVC outer sheath but has no internal armour layer. It's built to handle being coiled, uncoiled, and moved around — normal use for a lead you get out for a weekend and put away afterward.
When you need armoured
Armoured cable is worth the extra cost when the lead is going to be:
- Left in place semi-permanently or permanently — running to a shed, summerhouse, or garden office
- Buried or run underground (in ducting, at the correct depth)
- Exposed to physical wear — foot traffic, garden tools, vehicles, or animals
- Relied upon for safety-critical or continuous use, where cable damage going unnoticed would be a real risk
Essentially: if the cable is going to stay put and take a beating over months or years, armoured is the right choice.
When a standard flex lead is the better fit
Standard outdoor extension leads (still IP66-rated and weatherproof) are the practical choice for:
- Occasional or seasonal use — BBQs, garden parties, seasonal lighting
- Leads you put away after use rather than leaving out permanently
- Lighter loads over shorter runs
- Cost-conscious setups where the cable won't be exposed to physical wear
There's no safety compromise here as long as the IP rating and RCD protection are correct — you're simply choosing a lead built for flexibility and regular handling rather than permanent exposure.
It's not just about the cable
Whichever type you choose, the cable armour (or lack of it) is only one factor. Always check:
- IP rating – IP66 minimum for anything exposed to weather, regardless of armoured or standard
- RCD protection – critical for any outdoor use
- Socket housing quality – this is usually the actual point of failure, armoured or not
- Amp rating – matched to what you're actually going to plug in
